Cultural heritage awareness among youth
Very Aberdeen was a placemaking campaign to shed a light on history and culture in neglected neighbourhoods like Aberdeen, a former fishing village at the south coast of Hong Kong island. Very Aberdeen brought workshops, walking tours, film screenings and more to the district’s waterfront. In preparation we spoke to many residents from professional artists to local elderly. Many of them used to live on the boats or their parents lived on the boats, doing some business on the water, like selling supplies to the fisherman. The oral history of the ‘water people’ is a unique slice of Hong Kong heritage.

As part of the placemaking campaign we organised a family treasure hunt with 10 checkpoints bringing local cultural heritage to life by showcasing little-known secrets, untold stories and urban legends. The objective was to encourage locals and visitors to explore the lesser visited sites in Aberdeen and promote the historical assets and traditional trades in the district.
100 families took part in a fun and educational afternoon, they got to see the neighbourhood through the lens of the people that call it home. They had a taste of authentic fishballs and fish congee, visited a floating temple, traveled by sampan, met the caretaker of the fisherman’s union and had a go at dragonboating.
