Agenda
Bring the museum experience about traditional trades out onto the streets
The Hong Kong Maritime Museum asked us to organise a spin-off activity for the 6-month long multimedia exhibition ‘Made in Hong Kong; My City, My Stories’. The HSBC sponsored exhibition was all about what makes Hong Kong unique – its history and its people. The designers structured it like a time travel experience for visitors to learn about Hong Kong’s exciting path and what it used to be famous for (for example its toy and film industry) – and then to contrast it to what it is famous for now (finance is one big driver).
The exhibition was very interactive and dynamic, with lots of screens and videos, as well as games to play. As part of the programming we created a scavenger hunt game: an outdoor-museum-experience that brought the exhibited stories to life in the streets of Sheung Wan. Using the iDiscover app, participating family teams got to navigate the streets, collecting stamps at six checkpoints on the way and learning all about traditional trades and crafts in this old neighbourhood.

“The winning photo showed dried goods in the Wah Tai Swallow’s Nest Shop on Wing Lok Street. We liked the creative and imaginative way of capturing the ‘Made in Hong Kong spirit’.”
- Caroline Lang, Head of Public Programming and Jury Member
Highlights were Kwong Wah, a traditional letterpress printing workshop in Sai Street, where kids saw a century old printing press in action, tasting medicinal herbal tea at Yuen Kut Lam in Jervois Street and discovering Old Master Q, HK’s own version of Donald Duck at Ng Hing Kee comic book shop in Lok Ku Road. The museum’s objective was to bring the exhibition into the city; sharing the stories of the craftsmen featured in the exhibition on-site into their workshops and ateliers. We delivered an educational and fun-filled interactive afternoon activity for 200 families.
