YANGON HERITAGE-LED URBAN REGENERATION PLAN

YANGON, MYANMAR, 2016-18

Team Leader / Heritage Economics Expert for a 6-month technical assistance to the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) and Yangon Heritage Trust (YHT) to produce a pre-feasibility study on potential tools and instruments to unlock private and public investment in renovation of heritage properties and public space in three pilot areas in downtown Yangon, Myanmar’s former capital. 

Result: 

  • Investment program for a comprehensive area based and heritage-led regeneration of the three identified pilot areas including assessment of the potential social, economic and environmental impact of the regeneration initiative and recommendations on safeguard measures. 
  • Design and feasibility studies for repurposing of 12 heritage buildings and upgrading of public space in three streets in Yangon’s historic core resulting in a US$50 million investment by Agence Française de Développement (AFD) in upgrading of buildings and public space in the study area.
  • Proposal for resident targeted micro-finance scheme for urban upgrading inspired the launch of  social enterprise Doh Eain that provides loans and technical support to home-owners in the historic core.
