ELMINA HERITAGE STRATEGY

ELMINA, GHANA, 2004 – 2006

Team leader / local economic development expert in a two-year technical assistance and capacity building project assisting the local development and traditional authorities in managing a 1.5-million-euro investment project to promote sustainable urban environment while at the same time stimulating the local economy and preserve the cultural heritage through tourism. Investments included a complementary mix of: 

• physical renovation of landmark public properties: preventing collapse St. George Castle, facilitating commercial use Fort St. Jago, renovation Nana Etsiapa Hall &19th century chapel and expansion of the Catholic Museum at St. Joseph Hill
• renovation of significant community-held or ancestral properties: Asafo Posts, Van Dijke & Cornelius House
• upgrading of public space: uplift Nana Kobina Gyan Square and Dutch Cemetery 
• local capacity building: business, artisans and tourguide training
• setting up of Tourism information facilities; 
• a revolving fund for renovation historic houses
