SLAVE ISLAND STREET ART WALK

SLAVE ISLAND, COLOMBO, 2019

By Firih Rahman and Ritwajit Das

Slave Island-based artist Firi Rahman started a visual project portraying the people that make up the unique neighbourhood. His wall murals feature people from the community: sportspeople, street vendors, mechanics, musicians, actors and artists. Slave Island is often perceived as an area filled with criminals, drug dealers and danger. It is also a place that is fast changing and disappearing, being swallowed up by the rapidly “modernising” Colombo. #WeAreFromHere showcases the true spirit of Slave Island: a fascinating, unique and diverse place.

“With all these new buildings springing up, people may feel that their land and properties can be bought just like that. By telling the stories of the community, I want to make people feel proud of their home and show their heritage and culture has value.”

– Firi Rahman
