ACTION PLANNING FOR SUMATRA HERITAGE CITIES

SUMATRA, INDONESIA, 2004-2006

Capacity building programme for heritage societies and local government in 10 cities in Sumatra. Three one-week workshops and continuous technical assistance to assist development of action plans, design and feasibility studies for adaptive re-use of historical sites to generate investment in redevelopment of Kota Lama (old town) of Semarang. The results of the 10 heritage action plans for 10 cities in Sumatra were a.o. a monopoly game as a community heritage awareness campaign in Aceh and feasibility studies for heritage buildings under threat of demolition, some of which have been implemented:  Tax Inspectorat Building, a former tax office in the city of Medan that was incorporated as a clubhouse in a new development, the Marba Building in Semarang that has been redeveloped into Spiegel Bar & Bistro in and the famous haunted ‘1,000 door building’, Lawang Sewu that has been renovated by PT. KAIi and is now used as a heritage and railway museum.
